When we analyse a morphological complex word within its inflectional paradigm, we are in fact studying it as part of a complex network of associative relations, based on its more or less systematic similarity to other words in form and meaning. The network metaphor is extremely powerful, and allows us to explore the connections between paradigms and more general cognitive issues such as word storage, generalization and learning. Focusing on the structure of the Italian verb system, I will illustrate the way paradigm-based morphology has changed our thinking about words, morphemes and aspects of lexical self-organization at large.
