The role of citation-form in lexical access. An experimental study

Prof. Pier Marco Bertinetto (Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa)

Lexemes of natural languages are referred to by so-called “citation-forms”, metalinguistically prominent. Do they also enjoy a lexical access advantage? In lexical decision experiments, the Infinitive (citation-form of Italian verbs) was compared with the Present Indicative 3SG, the most frequent form. Results suggest that the cognitive impact of the Infinitive depends on interaction with various morphological and psycholinguistic factors, whose relative weight might be a language-specific function.
